Supporting a Startup Company with a Battery Pack Solution
Challenge
Epec was approached by a manufacturer of outdoor sporting equipment. They were investigating a company that could assemble a battery pack and reached out to us to explain what they were trying to accomplish. They were manually creating a battery pack using hobby battery cells and building their own battery pack to go in a motor assisted deep sea fishing rod.
Through video calls and actual samples they had produced, they showed us what they had in regard to their current product and asked if it was something we'd be interested in and we could provide an improved cleaner more robust solution as their market interest was increasing and they were not able to manage higher volumes. They were also looking for expertise in a more repeatable and scalable product instead of hand assembling with off-the-shelf parts and performing all the testing themselves.
They approached Epec because we're a reputable battery pack manufacturer, they learned we manage several custom electronic products. They were a small startup company, and not many battery assembly companies are interested in new projects from startup companies because of financial risks. With this being a custom battery pack with unique features and with increased volumes projected along with gaining global interests we were the right sized company to help develop and manage this battery business for them.
Solution
We vetted this project to understand the customers’ scope of work and product objects. We ended up quoting a few iterations to produce a couple round of sample lots to allow the customer to perform some field testing. Increasing the cell capacity to meet the motor demands in their device and finalizing the design with a battery cell that would meet their requirements and a battery management systems (BMS) that captured all the functional features they needed.
The customer exhibited at a trade show with their product being well received and increased market interest for higher volumes, which now fits perfectly in our business model.
Result
The solution we provided was to provide a complete battery pack with a wire harness as opposed to the customer buying all the components and assembling it themselves and trying to increase their volumes.
Our solution provided a much more professional, robust battery pack that we will be able to produce in higher volumes to manage releases for the customer which will better support their business as well. Epec also certifies the battery pack for them so that it's legal to transport and sell internationally.
